It’s been a while, but we’re back!

Where have you been?

Not long after my last post, we gained an additional family member. My son was born in mid-September, and I spent about six weeks working from home so I could help out while my wife recovered from the surgery.

Now that it has been a few months, and we have some idea of what a schedule should look like, I can get back to doing what I want to do: Making comics.

The “break” came at a good time. Sitting around while giving the baby a bottle at 10pm, I found myself with a lot of time to rethink my approach to the story I wanted to write/draw. If I stuck with my original plan, I probably would have abandoned it after a couple of pages.

What is going on with this newsletter?

I’m going to post weekly for the foreseeable future. I just need to find the right day to do so. I’m pushing this one through today because I just want to have at least one more update in 2023.

As for what is going on here, I’m going to do a little experiment to see how things go by adding two new sections to this site:

1. The Absolute Worst: The new comic I’m working on. It’s plotted. I know where I want it to go, I just need to spend the month of January writing the script to I can start drawing this thing by February 1st.

2. Jittery Robot: A somewhat autobiographical sketchbook comic.

I’m doing The Absolute Worst, because I must. It has been living rent free in my head for almost two decades. I’m ready to make it. Jittery Robot is something I am doing 100% for my own amusement. No pressure. No deadlines. Just fun.

In addition to the comics, I figure I’ll use this to post sketches, behind the scenes content and works in progress. Then we’ll decide how to best use the paid tiers on Substack.

Anything else?

In my absence, my workspace has gone to hell.

It became the official dumping ground for everything that doesn’t have a place, or needs to be tossed out. I spent the better part of this week looking after my wife, daughter and the baby since everyone but the baby and I were sick. While he was napping I was able to chip away at this mess until I got a relatively workable setup.

I had to get rid of a desk, but now there is room for my “work-from-home” computer as well as my art computer/drawing board and art supplies. I was originally hoping to do this all as a stop motion video, but I was just too eager to get it cleaned up, so I didn’t bother setting up the camera.

It’s in a state where I can actually work now, but it’s still not decluttered enough for my liking. Once everything is in place, and the place is quiet enough to do so, I’ll do a video walkthrough of my set up.
