Cat Tales

Just wanted to see how this one would look in colour.

I may stick with this scheme.

Hello Substack!

The other night I got an email saying a plugin on my website had updated. Then I got about six more so I just started deleting them as they came in. As it turns out, one of those emails was informing me that something went wrong with an update and my site was dead. Two days later and a quick conversation with my hosting company, we discovered which plugin cause the problem and deactivated it. Unfortunately, the damage was done and I had to restore the site from a backup that was roughly one or two weeks old, so all the work I put into revamping it last week has gone out the window.

I just set up a store and Patreon integration in hopes of turning my cartooning into a side gig, and now I’m quickly trying to put all that back together again.

This cannot be allowed to happen again.

Ever.

So I am setting up this Substack account to serve as a back up. I am enabling payments and offering paid posts as an alternative to Patreon. This way, if my website goes down again for two days, I am moving the URL over here and this will become the new official website. Whatever I post to Patreon or MorningCoffeeComics.com will also get posted here, so if you end up being a paid subscriber, think of this as one stop shopping.

I know this sounds like I am being overly cautious, because I am. I lost two solid days of work and was just lucking I hadn’t begun advertising the store or the Patreon yet, otherwise that could have made a horrible first impression.

Great News!

I just got my first paying comic gig!

I got the news a couple of weeks ago, but I’m just getting around to posting this now. I was going to work on my comic strip, but this is taking priority. It’s not a long comic, I’m told it only needs to be 1-9 pages in length, and it’s not due until April so I’ve got time to work on it. Still, I want to get it done so I’m not freaking out in mid-March that the deadline is looming. Once I get the details on the Kickstarter campaign I’ll drop a link here. Until then, I’ll keep this shrouded in mystery while I work on it.

Follow me on Twitch to be notified when I go live!

The video/podcast will be put off until I’m done that. I would have used this project as the basis for the video/podcast but I’m not exactly clear on what I’m allowed to talk about or show prior to the release of the anthology. Instead, I’ve decided to stream some practice sketches and comic strip work whenever I have a free moment to do so. Or I might just take a Tetris break and you can watch me do that instead. Whichever. Either way, I’m either going to do this on my personal YouTube channel or over on the Twitch channel I set up specifically for this purpose.

This post is all over the place, I’m writing it without a plan (other than announcing I got hired). In regards to this project, I have started the preliminary sketches (because I wanted to make sure I could actually draw it) and started the page/panel breakdown of what I’m going to draw. I thought about doing the Marvel method, but just drawing it based off the plot and adding the dialogue later sounds a little risky. I mean, this is my first published work, so I want to make sure I put 110% into getting it done right.

My server has been running slow lately, and has been mostly unresponsive due to today’s maintenance, so I’m hoping this goes this actually posts properly. I’m going to do a podcast for this site that will document my comic creation process before pivoting to something else comic related. Each episode will focus on whatever stage of the process I happen to be working on that day. All the way from ideation to distribution.

We’re Back!

It’s been a while since we’ve had an actual website for Morning Coffee Comics, but we’re getting busier here and decided the website is an expense that we can justify.

Because things are going the way they are going, we have instituted a mandate for Morning Coffee Comics: Make Comics. Talk Comics. Love Comics.

Let me elaborate:

Make Comics – They don’t have to be award winning, you just have to get your ideas down on paper and start drawing.

Talk Comics – Comics have a long history of being targeted at children as the primary demographic. I have found that couldn’t be further from the truth. Comics are for everyone and all ages and so let’s talk about that and maybe find something suitable for those not familiar with the medium.

Love Comics – Comics are for everyone. There are no gatekeepers preventing you from reading the comics you want to read, or making the comics you want to make. Not everything will be your cup of tea, so don’t speak ill of something just because you don’t like it. It may be someone else’s favourite.

A lot of these videos we make will be on YouTube, but we will also be putting a lot more effort into getting content onto our TikTok account.
